In tonights Stan Brooke Pairs final Tony Massey and Liam Pullen attempted to give a hefty 210 points start to Bramley WMC's Richard Hirst and Adam Winestein.
To have any chance, Massey/Pullen needed to get off to a good start and they did just that settling quickly and systematically freezing out their opponents. A nicely taken 38 break from Pullen put them in front and they managed to limit the Bramley pair to just one scoring shot when Richard Hirst potted the green. The frame score was 112-73.
The second frame followed similar lines, Hirst/Winestein potting just 2 reds apiece in a 88-74 defeat, which meant they had scored just 7 points in the first 2 frames.
With a 53 point aggregate lead going into the final frame the NSC pairing looked to have the match sewn up but Hirst/Winestein finally started to settle and actually scored the opening 16 points in the third frame to increase their overall aggregate lead to 33 and give themselves an outside chance.
With one red left the aggregate scores were level and the tension was rising.
When Richard Hirst potted a long blue his side were 1 point behind with just pink and black remaining.
Tony Massey then sank a pressure pink to go 7 up with 7 on and left what he thought was a safe black on the side cushion.
Hirst stepped up and went for a risky double into the corner pocket which paid dividends when it flew into the pocket.
So with the scores tied at 253 points each the black was re-spotted. After a couple of safety shots, Adam Winestein attempted a half ball black into the corner pocket which went wide, but he then watched in horror as the white went round 2 cushions and rolled agonisingly slowly into the yellow pocket on the lightning fast NSC match table giving the 7 points and the match to Massey/Pullen.
Thanks to Michael Davenport for refereeing and to the NSC for use of the facilities.
